I recently graduated from The University of Huddersfield in July 2014 with a First-Class BA Hons degree in Journalism. During my time at university, I embraced several opportunities to work with local charities as their press officer.
In my final year I enjoyed working with local charity group, Wakefield Morris Dancers, as their press officer. This involved set up and maintenance of social media accounts including Facebook and Twitter, regular blog updates with news and information provided by the client, as well as press releases and articles that were produced for distribution to the local and regional press. Digital design on Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop was also used to create adverts and flyers for publication and distribution on relevant platforms.
Previous work included creating a mock PR campaign for a local charity, which was then pitched to the charity founders using PowerPoint and other visual media. I took the lead role in the group, organising, delegating and designing the presentation while taking on board opinions and concerns of members of the team and adapting where needed.
One of my proudest achievements during my time at university was my time working as a group to create a pitch for a new magazine. I took on the role of editor, and our tasks included creating an eight page dummy copy of our proposed magazine including original editorial copy, as well as financial forecasting, advertising and social media set up. This was to be presented to a panel of industry professionals in a 30-minute presentation.
Other modules including Writing for Magazines and Strategic PR have also praised me for my writing style, interview technique, original ideas and graphic design work. Other relevant experience includes proficiency in the Microsoft suite, Final Cut Pro and Avid.
